Indian Air Force Airlifts Army Personnel for Rescue Operations in Rain-Hit Shimla
Shimla, Himachal Pradesh: A significant landslide struck Shimla's Summer Hill area on Wednesday, sparking a rapid response from authorities to conduct search and rescue operations. The incident, which occurred earlier this week, has also brought attention to the ongoing torrential rains causing havoc across Himachal Pradesh.
Swift Action for Search and Rescue
Reports indicate that a search and rescue operation was immediately initiated as news of the landslide spread. Sniffer dogs and rescue teams were promptly dispatched to the scene to aid in the operation. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported as a result of the incident. However, authorities continue to remain vigilant for any potential developments.
Indian Air Force's Assistance
In an effort to support the ongoing rescue operations, the Indian Air Force undertook an airlift operation to transport 18 army soldiers along with a 3-Ton Mini Dozer. The swift action aimed to aid the rescue efforts in areas affected by landslides near Shimla. The deployment was conducted using a Chinook helicopter from the Western Air Command.
Rain Fury and Its Consequences
The persistent heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh have caused extensive damage to buildings and properties. On a separate incident on Tuesday, a landslide in Shimla's Krishna Nagar area led to the collapse of 5 to 7 houses. Authorities revealed that some residents were feared to be trapped under debris. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and state police personnel have been actively involved in the ongoing rescue efforts.
Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's Response
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, held a high-powered committee meeting to address the escalating disaster situation. He noted that a 157-percent surge in rainfall over the past four days has significantly contributed to the damage. Despite the challenges, Sukhu assured that his government is fully committed to prioritizing restoration efforts.
Restoration Efforts Underway
Efforts to restore normalcy have been underway, with around 400 out of 1,220 blocked roads already cleared. Additionally, the Chief Minister issued directives to swiftly reinstate the affected electricity and water schemes. Sukhu emphasized the importance of addressing concerns brought about by the uprooting of over 500 trees due to urban expansion in Shimla. To manage this, the Forest Department has been tasked with efficient disposal of the fallen trees.
The situation in Himachal Pradesh remains challenging as the state grapples with the aftermath of the landslides, cloudbursts, and road blockades triggered by the relentless rainfall.
