Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Grace 9th National Handloom Day Celebration at Bharat Mandapam

Preserving Heritage: National Handloom Day, a Tribute to Swadeshi Movement, Showcases India's Rich Tradition of Craftsmanship.
New Delhi, August 6, 2023: Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is set to participate in the grand celebration of the 9th National Handloom Day on August 7th at 12 noon, to be held at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, Delhi. The event is expected to draw over 3000 handloom and khadi weavers, artisans, and key stakeholders from the textile and MSME sectors, marking a significant moment for India's rich tradition of artistry and craftsmanship.

Since its inception in 2015, the National Handloom Day has gained importance as a platform to showcase and support the artisans and craftsmen who have been instrumental in preserving the nation's cultural heritage. The date, August 7th, holds a historical significance as it commemorates the Swadeshi Movement launched on the same day in 1905, advocating for indigenous industries and particularly emphasizing the significance of handloom weavers.

Prime Minister Modi's consistent advocacy for the upliftment and empowerment of artisans aligns perfectly with the essence of the National Handloom Day celebration. Over the years, the event has evolved into a platform that not only acknowledges the craftsmanship of handloom weavers but also facilitates a space for policy dialogues and support mechanisms to be discussed and implemented.

During this year's celebration, the Prime Minister will launch the e-portal of "भारतीय वस्त्र एवं शिल्प कोष" (Indian Textile and Crafts Repository), a commendable initiative developed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). This repository is poised to become a valuable resource in preserving and promoting India's diverse textile heritage.

The event is a culmination of collaborative efforts from various quarters of the handloom industry. It will bring together handloom clusters from all corners of the country, NIFT campuses, Weaver Service Centres, Indian Institute of Handloom Technology campuses, National Handloom Development Corporation, Handloom Export Promotion Council, KVIC institutions, and various State Handloom Departments. The convergence of these stakeholders will foster knowledge sharing, skill enhancement, and capacity building within the handloom and khadi sector.

The 9th National Handloom Day celebration is not just an event but a reaffirmation of the nation's commitment to preserving its cultural tapestry and recognizing the significant contributions of handloom weavers and artisans. With Prime Minister Modi's participation and the launch of the innovative e-portal, this year's celebration is poised to create ripples of positive change throughout the industry and continue the legacy of supporting indigenous artistry.
