Historic Peace Deal Marks the End of Insurgency in Assam's Tribal Area

From Conflict to Harmony: DNLA Cadres Surrender in Haflong
Assam, India – October 30, 2023: In a monumental moment for Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the successful culmination of efforts to bring peace to the tribal areas of the state. With the blessings and support of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, Assam marked the end of insurgency in April 2023 through a groundbreaking peace deal with the Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA).

This historic milestone was celebrated today as 181 DNLA cadres voluntarily surrendered their arms in Haflong. To facilitate their transition into mainstream society, each surrendered cadre was offered a fixed deposit of ₹4 lakh, demonstrating the government's commitment to their rehabilitation.

The journey to this momentous achievement began in May 2021 when the state initiated a mission to encourage insurgents to lay down their arms and return to the path of peace. Nearly 7,200 insurgents have heeded the call, making Assam a shining example of how dialogue and diplomacy can bring an end to violent conflict. Importantly, the region has witnessed zero lives lost to extremist violence since May 2021, a stark contrast to the tragic toll of over 400 lives lost two decades ago.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, "Making Assam insurgency-free is paramount in ensuring we become one of the top 5 states of Bharat." The newfound peace and stability will not only improve the lives of Assam's residents but also provide an environment conducive to economic growth and development.

With the restoration of peace, Assam is now poised for a brighter future. The support and blessings of the people will be integral to realizing the vision of a 'সোণালী অসম' (Golden Assam), a land of prosperity, unity, and harmony. This historic peace deal serves as a testament to the power of dialogue and the potential for transformation even in regions that have witnessed prolonged conflict.

Assam's journey towards becoming an insurgency-free and prosperous state stands as a beacon of hope for regions facing similar challenges across the nation. The commitment of Assam's leadership and the resilience of its people have paved the way for a brighter tomorrow, illustrating the incredible impact that peaceful resolutions can have on communities and societies.
