Afghanistan Embassy in New Delhi Permanently Closes Amidst Challenges

The Afghanistan embassy announces the permanent closure of its diplomatic mission in New Delhi, citing ongoing challenges from the Indian government.
New Delhi, November 23, 2023: The Afghanistan embassy has officially announced the permanent closure of its diplomatic mission in New Delhi, effective as of November 23, 2023. The decision, revealed in an official statement, cites persistent challenges from the Indian government as the primary reason for this drastic move.

The embassy had previously ceased operations on September 30, expressing hope that the Indian government's stance would change favorably to allow the mission to operate normally. The closure has been framed as a result of broader changes in policy and interests rather than internal conflicts or diplomatic allegiances.

In its statement, the embassy addressed potential characterizations of the move involving diplomats allegedly switching allegiance to the Taliban. It clarified that the decision stems from evolving policies and interests, extending sincere gratitude to Afghan citizens in India for their understanding and support throughout the mission's tenure.

Despite facing limitations in resources and power, the Afghan embassy emphasized its tireless efforts for the betterment of the Afghan community in India. Noting a significant decline in the Afghan community over the past two years and three months, the embassy highlighted challenges faced by Afghan refugees, students, and traders, with the number nearly halving since August 2021.

The statement assured the Afghan community that the mission operated transparently, accountably, and with a commitment to fair treatment based on the historic ties and bilateral relations with India. It acknowledged efforts to tarnish the embassy's image but emphasized the team's dedication to securing humanitarian aid, online education scholarships, easing trade, and advocating for a broad-based government.

The embassy's diplomatic efforts included exerting pressure on those hindering the formation of an inclusive government and denying education to millions of Afghan girls. The statement clarified that there are no diplomats from the Afghan Republic in India, with those who served having safely reached third countries.

The fate of the mission is now in the hands of the Indian government, which must decide whether to maintain its closure or explore alternatives, potentially involving Taliban diplomats. The embassy concluded its statement expressing gratitude to the people of India for their support over the past 22 years and reiterated its commitment to supporting Afghanistan in challenging times.

It's worth noting that the embassy had initially announced the closure of operations on November 1, citing a lack of resources and the Taliban regime's failure to meet Afghanistan's interests. It also denounced certain consulates working on instructions and funding from Kabul, considering them inconsistent with the objectives of a legitimate government.
