New Delhi: In a significant development for Bihar's infrastructure, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has granted approval for the construction of a new 6-lane high-level bridge spanning 4.56 km across the River Ganga. The project, estimated at Rs. 3,064.45 crore, aims to connect Digha and Sonepur in the state.
Project Overview:
The proposed bridge, to be constructed in EPC mode, serves a critical need in overcoming the current economic blockade caused by the limited connectivity between Digha and Sonepur. Presently, these locations are connected by a Rail Cum Road Bridge suitable only for light vehicles, hindering the transportation of goods. The new bridge is poised to unlock the economic potential of the region by enabling the smooth flow of goods and commodities.
Enhanced Connectivity:
Upon completion, the bridge will establish direct connectivity from Patna to the Golden Quadrilateral corridor via NH-139 at Aurangabad and Sonepur (NH-31). It will significantly improve connectivity to key regions such as Chhapra, Motihari (East-West corridor old NH-27), and Bettiah (NH-727) in Northern Bihar. Additionally, the project forms part of the Buddha circuit, providing improved access to landmarks like the Buddha Stupa at Vaishali and the Keshariya temple.
Implementation and Technology:
The project will leverage modern technology, including 5D-Building Information Modelling (BIM) and a Bridge Health Monitoring System (BHMS). Monthly drone mapping will ensure construction and operational quality. The implementation is slated to be completed in 42 months, employing the latest advancements in construction methodologies.
Socio-Economic Impact:
The bridge's construction and maintenance phases are anticipated to generate direct employment opportunities for both skilled and unskilled workers. With a focus on promoting faster and smoother commuting, the project aims to catalyze socio-economic growth in the entire region.
The Cabinet's approval for this strategic infrastructure project underscores the government's commitment to fostering development in Bihar. The new bridge across the River Ganga is poised to become a vital lifeline, enhancing connectivity and unlocking economic opportunities for the people of Patna, Saran, and beyond. The timeline set for the project reflects a concerted effort to expedite the region's growth trajectory.
