MIZORAM, 2 December 2023: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has decided to revise the date of counting for the General Election to the Legislative Assembly of Mizoram, moving it from the 3rd to the 4th of December. The decision has garnered mixed reactions, but Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) candidate Lalnghinglova Hmar has expressed his support.
Hmar, a prominent figure in the ZPM, acknowledged Mizoram's Christian majority and highlighted a potential challenge with counting votes on a Sunday. He stated, "We all know Mizoram is a Christian majority state... Counting votes on Sunday will be a big problem 90% of the activities stop on Sunday. So, it is a very welcome decision from the ECI... So, I'm happy because the vote will never change, it is only the day."
This shift in the counting date has raised concerns about the impact on regular Sunday activities and the predominantly Christian community's routines. Despite these concerns, Hmar's perspective emphasizes that the essence of the election – the votes – remains unchanged, and the alteration is confined to the day of counting.
As Mizoram prepares for this crucial electoral event, the ECI's decision is poised to ensure a smoother and more accommodating process. The move reflects an understanding of the unique socio-cultural context of Mizoram, particularly its Christian-majority demographic.
The revision in the counting date has sparked discussions and concerns, it is welcomed by some key figures like Lalnghinglova Hmar, who view it as a positive adjustment that respects the religious and cultural dynamics of Mizoram. The focus remains on the democratic process, with the assurance that the votes cast will be accurately counted, regardless of the day chosen for this significant event.
