Opposition Alliance Raises Alarms on EVM Integrity, Urges ECI to Address Concerns

Opposition Coalition Takes Unified Stand
New Delhi, December 19, 2023 - The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), a coalition of opposition parties, including the Congress, has jointly submitted a detailed memorandum to the Election Commission of India (ECI), expressing concerns about the design and operation of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). This move, dated December 19, 2023, signifies a collective effort by opposition forces to address perceived issues in the electoral process.

Despite the comprehensive nature of the memorandum, the ECI has been notably reluctant to engage in discussions with the INDIA delegation, heightening apprehensions among political stakeholders and citizens alike. The alliance emphasizes that doubts surrounding the integrity of EVMs have not only been raised by political entities but also by experts and professionals.

A noteworthy proposal put forth by the INDI alliance involves a modification in the handling of Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips. In this suggested approach, the VVPAT slip would be handed directly to the voter, who would then personally place it in a separate ballot box after verifying their choice. The alliance advocates for a thorough 100% counting of VVPAT slips, viewing this measure as essential to restoring public confidence in the fairness of elections.

The rallying cry of the alliance, encapsulated in the slogan "Badlega Bharat Jeetega INDIA!" (India will change, India will win!), underscores the collective call for transformative reforms in the electoral system. As the opposition alliance presses for transparency, political observers are keenly monitoring developments and await the Election Commission of India's response to these critical concerns.
