Violence Spreads Across Karbi Anglong as Conflicting Accounts Emerge
Diphu, Assam- 17 February, 24: In a significant development amidst escalating tensions in Karbi Anglong, the Karbi Students' Association (KSA) has announced restrictions targeting the Bihari community, sparking further concern over the deteriorating situation in the region.

According to George Timung, General Secretary of the KSA, all town committees under the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council are permitted to resume business activities from tomorrow, except for Bihari-owned shops and establishments. Timung emphasized that any incidents occurring henceforth would hold the responsible parties accountable. This announcement was made amidst an ongoing indefinite strike at the KSA office, further exacerbating tensions.

The recent outbreak of violence in Kheroni Sariali, Karbi Anglong, involving clashes between the KSA and RNSS , has heightened concerns across the region. What initially began as a peaceful protest organized by the KSA on February 15th in response to demands presented by the Rachnatmak Nonia Sanyukta Sangh (RNSS) of Assam to President Draupadi Murmu, quickly escalated into a dangerous situation the following day.

Reports indicate that on February 16th, members of the Karbi community initiated violence against innocent members of the Bihari community, sparking baseless accusations and targeted assaults. Allegedly, unknown miscreants instigated violence by throwing stones, leading to widespread acts of aggression against the Bihari community. Disturbing incidents of assault on individuals associated with the Diphu Railway and labor communities, forced closures of shops, and the propagation of discriminatory slogans have been reported across East and West Karbi Anglong.

Amidst the escalating violence, conflicting accounts have emerged regarding the initial confrontation between RNSS members and the KSA. While RNSS members claim they were first assaulted while returning from a protest, the KSA maintains that they were provoked and attacked without cause.

In some disturbing developments, reports have surfaced alleging that during protests, KSA members were seen abusive Bihari Community and throwing stones at targeted Bihari houses in Diphu and Manja, exacerbating tensions and further endangering the safety of the community. KSA has support of All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC).

The unfolding events have underscored the urgent need for immediate intervention to restore peace and security in the region. Calls for tolerance, dialogue, and respect for all communities have echoed amidst growing apprehension over the volatile situation.

In response to the Kheroni violence, the Assam Police have apprehended 17 individuals, marking a significant step towards addressing the escalating tensions. However, concerns persist over the safety and well-being of all communities involved, necessitating swift and decisive action to quell the unrest and prevent further escalation.

As investigations continue and efforts to restore peace unfold, it is imperative for authorities to prioritize the protection of vulnerable communities and uphold the principles of justice and equality. The incidents in Karbi Anglong serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for unity, compassion, and concerted efforts to foster harmony and understanding among all sections of society.
