Investigation Initiated Under Section 20(3)(a) for Alleged 'Quid Pro Quo' in Parliamentary Matters
19 March, 24: The Lokpal has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mahua Moitra under Section 20(3)(a) for allegations of 'quid pro quo' regarding questions raised in Parliament. The directive comes after a careful evaluation of the material on record, indicating serious concerns regarding Moitra's conduct in her capacity as a public representative.
In its order, the Lokpal stated, "We direct the CBI, under Section 20(3)(a), to investigate all aspects of the allegations made in the complaint and submit a copy of the Investigation Report within a period of six months." The order emphasizes the need for a thorough probe to establish the truth, considering the seriousness of the allegations and Moitra's influential position.
The Lokpal underscored the importance of rooting out corruption and ensuring probity in public service, especially among public representatives. Corruption, it stated, adversely affects the functioning of democracy and imposes a heavy responsibility on public servants to uphold integrity in their duties.
The directive instructs the CBI to provide periodic updates on the status of the investigation and mandates cooperation from the Registry in providing necessary documents for the probe.
