Mamata Banerjee Criticizes Doordarshan Logo Color Change as 'Pro-BJP Bias'

West Bengal CM expresses shock and disapproval over the sudden change in Doordarshan logo color.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has voiced concern over the sudden change in the color of the Doordarshan logo during the ongoing national elections. Banerjee took to social media to express her shock and disapproval of what she referred to as the "saffronisation" of the iconic logo.

In a post on 20 April, Banerjee stated, "I am shocked at the sudden saffronisation and change of colour of our Doordarshan logo when the national elections are taking place across the country! It is absolutely unethical, grossly illegal, and speaks loudly of the pro-BJP bias of the national public broadcaster!"

The West Bengal CM's remarks come amidst the backdrop of ongoing Lok Sabha elections being held across the nation. The sudden change in the Doordarshan logo's color has sparked controversy and raised questions about the impartiality of the national broadcaster.

Banerjee further criticized the Election Commission of India (ECI) for allegedly allowing what she described as a "crude, pro-Saffron violation" of the Model Code of Conduct. She urged the ECI to take immediate action to stop the change and revert to the original blue color of the Doordarshan logo.

The Doordarshan logo, recognized for its iconic blue color, has undergone a noticeable alteration, with a shift towards a more saffron hue, which is associated with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Congress's Manish Tewari also weighed in on the controversy, stating, "Logo colour change is an attempt to Saffronism & Modi's bid to capture Govt institutions." Jawhar, Former CEO of Prasar Bharti, expressed his concern, saying, "It is hurting. I have been watching its saffronisation with alarm."

The ECI, as the regulatory body overseeing elections, is yet to respond to Banerjee's allegations.

This development has reignited discussions about the independence and neutrality of media platforms, especially during critical electoral processes. As one of the primary sources of information for the public, the impartiality of national broadcasters like Doordarshan is paramount to maintaining the integrity of democratic processes.

As the debate continues to unfold, Mamata Banerjee's call for the reversal of the logo change has added a new dimension to the ongoing electoral discourse.
