In Punjab, ahead of a planned demonstration seeking the relocation of Amritpal Singh, leader of 'Waris Punjab De' and a Khalistan supporter, from an Assam jail to a Punjab facility, his mother's arrest has ignited fervent advocacy. Amritpal Singh, apprehended last April and charged under the National Security Act (Rasuka), remains detained along with his nine associates in Dibrugarh Jail, Assam.
On Sunday, Police Superintendent Alam Vijay Singh disclosed that Amritpal Singh's mother, Balwinder Kaur, has been placed under judicial custody. While the Deputy Commissioner of Police cited precautionary measures, further details were withheld.
Multiple Punjab Police teams were deployed across states, conducting extensive raids from Punjab to Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan in search of Amritpal Singh. The widespread operation prompted internet shutdowns in Punjab and the imposition of Section 144 in various districts. After a 36-day pursuit, on April 23, 2023, Punjab Police successfully apprehended Amritpal Singh outside a gurdwara in Rode village, Bathinda, notable as the ancestral village of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.
Currently detained in Dibrugarh Jail, Assam, Amritpal Singh and his associates' families advocate for their transfer to Punjab, intensifying calls for justice and prison reform.
