ICMR Issues Health Warning on Sugarcane Juice Amid Rising Temperatures

ICMR's Initiative Aims to Combat Health Risks Associated with Excessive Sugar Consumption
New Delhi, June 1, 2024 - As the summer heat intensifies, many people turn to refreshing drinks like sugarcane juice to cool down. However, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has raised concerns about the high sugar content in sugarcane juice, advising minimal consumption due to potential health risks. In collaboration with the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), the ICMR has introduced 17 new guidelines to encourage healthier eating habits.

High Sugar Content in Sugarcane Juice

The ICMR has highlighted the significant sugar levels in sugarcane juice, which contains approximately 13-15 grams of sugar per 100 milliliters. This high sugar content is a cause for concern, particularly as the drink is widely consumed across India during the summer months.

"Sugarcane juice, which is extensively consumed in India, particularly during summers, is high in sugar and hence its consumption should be minimized," stated the ICMR. Medical experts recommend that adults should consume no more than 30 grams of free sugar daily, while children aged 7 to 10 should limit their intake to 24 grams.

Whole Fruits Over Fruit Juices

In addition to cautioning against sugarcane juice, the ICMR also advises against consuming fruit juices with added sugar, recommending whole fruits as a healthier alternative due to their fiber and nutrient content. The guidelines suggest that freshly made juices should use no more than 100-150 grams of whole fruit to ensure a balanced intake of nutrients.

"Whole fruits are preferable as they contain fiber and other essential nutrients," the ICMR noted. This recommendation aims to reduce the intake of free sugars while promoting the consumption of natural, nutrient-rich foods.

New Dietary Guidelines

The ICMR and NIN's 17 new dietary guidelines focus on encouraging the consumption of whole foods, reducing sugar intake, and promoting overall healthier eating habits. These guidelines are part of a broader effort to combat rising health issues related to poor diet and excessive sugar consumption.
