"It Will Be a Colossal Disaster for Our Country," Says Chidambaram
New Delhi, July 28, 2024 — Congress MP Karti Chidambaram has voiced strong opposition to the idea of India hosting the Olympics, citing concerns about the country's financial stability. Speaking on the potential bid for the 2036 Olympics, Chidambaram warned that hosting the event would drive India into substantial debt.
"It will be a colossal disaster for our country," he stated, emphasizing the potential economic burden. Chidambaram argued that the infrastructure investments required for the Olympics would largely go unused after the event, leading to wastage of significant financial resources.
"Infrastructure built with the money will go unused after the Olympics," he explained. Instead of pouring money into hosting the games, Chidambaram suggested a more effective approach: "It’s better to focus on supporting our sportspersons and give them the resources."
Contrasting Chidambaram’s view, Nita Ambani, an influential figure in Indian sports administration, expressed optimism about India's potential to host the Olympics. "The day is not far when India will host the Olympics," Ambani remarked, highlighting the aspirations of bringing the prestigious event to the country.
India is considering a bid to host the 2036 Olympics, a move that has sparked a debate on the economic implications and benefits of such an endeavor. While proponents believe it could elevate India's global stature and boost tourism, critics like Chidambaram warn of the financial repercussions.
The discussion continues as India weighs the pros and cons of entering the race to host one of the world's largest sporting events.
