Historic Announcement Marks Dark Chapter in Indian Democracy
New Delhi, July 12, 2024 – In a significant move, the Indian government has announced the annual observance of June 25 as 'Constitution Killing Day'. This day marks the proclamation of the Emergency on June 25, 1975, by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, an event considered a dark chapter in Indian democratic history when democratic voices were silenced and millions were unjustly imprisoned.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah posted about this on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, "On June 25, 1975, then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi displayed her dictatorial mentality by imposing the Emergency, strangling the soul of Indian democracy. Millions were unjustly jailed, and the media's voice was suppressed. The Indian government has decided to observe June 25 every year as 'Constitution Killing Day'. This day will honor the immense contributions of all those who endured the inhumane pain of the 1975 Emergency."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his views on X regarding this matter. He stated, "On June 25, #SamvidhaanHatyaDiwas will remind the countrymen of the dire conditions the nation had to endure after the crushing of the Constitution. This day is also to pay homage to all those who suffered the severe agony of the Emergency. The nation will always remember this oppressive move by Congress as a black chapter in Indian history."
The government's decision aims to remind the public of that painful period when citizens' rights were violated, and the core of democracy was threatened. 'Constitution Killing Day' will honor the struggle and sacrifice of all those who faced atrocities during the Emergency and contributed to protecting Indian democracy.
