New Delhi: In a major breakthrough for Indian security agencies, Lashkar-e-Taiba operative Salman Rehman Khan has been extradited from Rwanda. The extradition was part of a covert operation led by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in collaboration with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Interpol's National Central Bureau in Kigali.
Khan, accused of funding terrorism and facilitating the supply of arms and explosives in Bengaluru, was deported through Interpol channels following a request from Indian authorities. His extradition marks the 17th successful operation by the NIA since 2020 to bring back terror-related fugitives.
A Long Trail of Terror Activities
Salman Rehman Khan's criminal activities came to light during his incarceration at Bengaluru Central Jail, where he was serving a sentence for a POCSO case between 2018 and 2022. During this time, Khan came under the influence of T Nasir, a convicted Lashkar-e-Taiba operative, and was reportedly radicalized.
After his release, Khan became an active member of Lashkar-e-Taiba, aiding the outfit's efforts to expand its network in Karnataka. When his name surfaced in a terror conspiracy case, he fled to Rwanda to evade capture. However, Indian agencies swiftly acted, issuing a Red Notice through Interpol, leading to his arrest in Rwanda.
NIA Takes Charge
Khan’s custody has been handed over to the NIA, which is now investigating his role in multiple terror-related cases. According to sources, his arrest is critical in dismantling the Lashkar’s operational network in South India.
“Khan’s interrogation is expected to shed light on connections between terror modules in Karnataka, Telangana, and other regions, as well as their larger assassination and destabilization plots,” said an official close to the investigation.
Lashkar's Growing Presence in South India
Investigations reveal that Lashkar-e-Taiba has been attempting to establish a robust network across Karnataka and neighboring states. The group has reportedly plotted targeted assassinations and organized terror training for recruits.
Operatives like T Nasir and others have been instrumental in radicalizing individuals and orchestrating attacks, including the Bengaluru blasts. Khan’s capture is expected to provide critical intelligence to unravel these plans and linkages with modules in Telangana and Nanded.
Global Collaborations Strengthen India's Counterterrorism Efforts
India’s diplomatic success in securing extraditions has played a key role in its fight against terror. The extradition of Salman Rehman Khan from Rwanda underscores the increasing global cooperation in counterterrorism efforts.
In 2024 alone, India has successfully extradited 26 individuals, including terrorists, financial offenders, and individuals accused of crimes against minors. The latest operation reflects the seamless coordination between Indian agencies and international partners.
Implications for Regional Security
Khan’s arrest is expected to deal a significant blow to Lashkar-e-Taiba’s ambitions in South India. With the NIA probing his role in various conspiracies, Indian authorities are optimistic about uncovering more details about the terror group’s strategies and associates.
This operation reinforces India’s commitment to eliminating terror networks and safeguarding national security through relentless pursuit and international cooperation.
