Swearing-in ceremony scheduled for February 20 at Ramlila Maidan.
New Delhi, February 19, 2025: In a significant political shift, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Rekha Gupta as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, marking the party’s return to power in the national capital after nearly three decades. This appointment makes Gupta the fourth woman to hold the CM post in Delhi’s history.
The decision was announced following a BJP legislative meeting, where senior party leaders, including central observers Ravi Shankar Prasad and Om Prakash Dhankar, finalized her selection.
BJP Reshapes Delhi Leadership with Key Appointments
Alongside Rekha Gupta, Parvesh Verma has been appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister. Verma, son of former Delhi CM Sahib Singh Verma, is expected to bring his political experience to support the new administration.
In another key move, BJP has nominated Vijender Gupta as the Speaker of the Delhi Assembly. Gupta, known for his resilience, won his seat even during the strong Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) waves in 2015 and 2020. Previously, he faced frequent expulsions from the assembly under AAP’s rule, where BJP MLAs often found themselves sidelined.
Who is Rekha Gupta?
Rekha Gupta, a seasoned politician, has been actively involved in Delhi’s politics. She previously served as the general secretary of BJP’s Delhi unit and was once the president of Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU). Her recent electoral victory from Shalimar Bagh was seen as a significant mandate, where she defeated AAP’s Bandana Kumari by a large margin.
BJP’s Return to Power in Delhi
This leadership change signals a new chapter for Delhi, as the BJP steps into governance after 27 years. The new administration is expected to focus on infrastructure development, law and order, and policy reforms, countering the previous governance model of the AAP government.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for February 20, 2025, at Ramlila Maidan, with prominent leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expected to attend.
As Delhi transitions under new leadership, all eyes are on how the BJP will reshape the capital’s governance and address key public concerns.
